Nominated for three Oscars and three BAFTA’s and Winner of Best Actor BAFTA award (Robert Downey Jr.)

The elderly Chaplin recollects moments from his life during a conversation with the editor of his autobiography. From his formative years in England to his highest successes in America, Charlie’s life, work, and loves are followed. While his screen characters were extremely hilarious, the man behind “The Little Tramp” was constantly haunted by a sense of loss.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Geraldine Chaplin, Anthony Hopkins,

Author's Notes

William Boyd on Chaplin

A classic biopic, directed by the one and only Richard Attenborough. Chaplin is recreated with astonishing virtuosity by Robert Downey jr. It was a struggle to bring this movie to the screen and the original Hollywood studio pulled out before it was refinanced with another. I share the writing credits with William Goldman. He is responsible for all the scenes featuring the old Charlie Chaplin: I didn’t write a word of them. Say no more.
